Nintendo has officially announced its upcoming Switch 2 in a video trailer published today. There is no specific release date other than "2025" and no official specifications either.

Bigger means better for the Nintendo Switch 2?

The Switch 2 looks very similar to the original but it's larger in all aspects. In the video, we can see the original Switch morph into Nintendo's upcoming Switch 2 showing a larger screen and Joy-Con controllers. The screen does appear to show a significant bezel which may be unappealing to some.

Instead of a sliding attachment, it looks like we are getting a snap-on attachment this time around - previous leaks did suggest this would be possible via magnets. The new Joy-Con controllers are black with classic Nintendo coloured accents, blue and peach, around the thumbsticks and on the inside where they snap to the screen. The BA/YX buttons have contrasting white-coloured lettering while the remaining buttons all have a deep black indenting outlining the controls. There is also a new button below the home button on the right Joy-Con and the video seems to show the controller being used in the same fashion as a mouse. With the controllers being bigger naturally, the SL and SR buttons are as well.

Fresh New Design

Atop the Switch 2, there is a new USB-C port next to the 3.5mm headphone jack. The kickstand has a new design - it's U-shaped, has rounded edges and extends the lower half of the unit. The new dock will be larger and the video shows a rounded edge dock this time around. Like the original Switch, it looks like a separate controller grip for snapping the Joy-Cons into will return. Overall the video shows a larger console with a fresh new rounded design.

Compatibility

The announcement also details that the new console will be backwards compatible with physical and digital Nintendo Switch games but does alert that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”
