There is always debate on whether to run the official Legion GO Drivers or to sideload them using methods we have previously covered on the site, while there are certainly benefits to both, is there really any difference?
Recently our friend over at GameTechPlanet upgraded his y Lenovo Legion Go by force-installing AMD’s latest Adrenalin driver for the 7840U, where he was previously running the latest Lenovo’s official GPU driver, which was released around 2 weeks ago, but still months old when it comes to the actual version and still doesn't implement AFMF 2
To do this, you will have to remove the official drivers and manually install AMD’s current driver by pointing the Device Manager at the extracted files. This is all covered with a video guide and comparison on his channel, included below.
Game Performance
In Space Marine 2, performance was often similar, though in more chaotic scenes, the AMD driver sometimes handled things a bit better. Interestingly, Cyberpunk 2077 was the opposite, Lenovo’s driver sometimes squeezed out a few more frames, and saw slightly lower temps, too. It just goes to show how much performance can vary by game.
The main highlight was enabling AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2, which was tested in Path of Exile 2. This feature really shines: it creates smoother, more responsive visuals even in titles that don’t have their own frame generation. The improvements in input latency and reduced ghosting were significant compared to earlier versions.
As for whether we recommend everyone do this, it depends. If you’re looking for a smoother Final Fantasy XVI experience or you really want Fluid Motion Frames 2 for other games, side-loading the AMD driver makes sense. But if you prefer the peace of mind and better integration that comes with the official Lenovo driver, especially since it’s improved over time, you might want to stick with that.
