The ROG Ally is probably one of the most powerful handheld devices you can get your hands on to enjoy a ton of your favorite games. Sure, there are plenty of titles already optimized for the ROG Ally, but you’re missing out on so many titles on the PS5 that don’t offer you the chance to play on any portable device. Well, guess what? We’re going to teach you how to stream all your PS5 games on your trusty ROG Ally.
Yes, you got that right. The Ally’s pretty good. If it’s powerful enough to handle plenty of AAA PC titles easily, it can also run most PS5 titles. Based on our experience so far, the trick works for every game.
Know that setting it up to stream your PS5 games has some gotchas, and it’s not perfect. That said, it’s as close as possible to fully experiencing PS5 games wherever you are in your home. By enabling remote play on your console and then using a remote play client, you’re going to be enjoying PS5 games like never before.
Setting Up Your PS5 for Remote Play
First things first, you’re going to enable remote play on your PS5. This setup is essential to stream your game from the console to your ROG Ally. All it takes is three simple steps:
Start your PS5 and head to Settings.
Then, go to System and then choose Remote Play.
There, toggle the Enable Remote Play setting to turn it on.
With your PS5 ready to stream for remote play, it’s time to set up your ROG Ally to play your PS5 titles.
How to Stream Your PS5 to ROG Ally
You'll need a remote play client to stream your PS5 games on a ROG Ally. Now, PlayStation has an official remote play client that you can use. The only problem with using the official thing is that you’re not going to get a truly handheld experience. To stream with PlayStation’s official remote play client, you’ll need to connect a wired controller to the ROG Ally to play. Even if you’re okay with that, it will cap the resolution to 720p.
With the trick we’ve got up our sleeve, you’ll be playing your PS5 titles on the ROG Ally at full resolution without the need to connect a PS5 controller.
The ROG Ally needs a good remote play client to stream PS5 games for a truly handheld experience. For this, there’s a great third-party remote play client called Chiaki. With this, you can use your ROG Ally’s own gamepad controls for PS5 Remote Play.
Mind you, Chiaki isn’t an official thing. Don’t worry. Unofficial doesn’t mean there’s something shady going on. It’s an open-source and free client that works for PS5 without any issues. Now, we’re going to go over the steps to use Chiaki to complete your ROG Ally PS5 Remote Play setup.
Install Chiaki
To download Chiaki, go to this webpage. At the time of writing, this is the latest version of the client available at the time of writing.
Set Your PS5 as the Host
Once you’ve downloaded the zip folder, extract the content and then run the chiaki.exe file on your ROG Ally. Since it’s not an official app for the ROG Ally, you’re going to get a warning. Select Run Anyway.
After you’ve got Chiaki running, select the “+” at the top-right corner and set the static IP of your PS5 as the Host. If you don’t know what it is, go to your PS5’s settings and check out System Information to find it.
After you set your PS5 as the host, it’ll ask you to enter your PSN Account ID and PIN to finish setting up.
Get Your PSN Account ID
To register and start using the Chiaki to play PS5 games on your ROG Ally, you’ll need to enter a PSN Account ID that’s coded for Chiaki. To do this, you’ll head to this link.
Once you’re here, enter your PSN Username and select Submit. This will allow you to retrieve your PSN Account ID encoded for use with Chiaki.
We’ve obviously edited out our ID, but that’s how you extract it. With this out of the way, you can finish registering your Chiaki. However, there are a few things you should handle to make your life easier when you actually start playing.
Calibrate Shortcuts
To enjoy playing your favorite games, you’re going to configure the controls properly and set up the shortcuts you’ll need when you’re in Remote Play.
On the ROG Ally, go to Control Mode and select Configure.
Go into Gamepad Mode, bind the F11 Key, Escape Key, and T Key like in the image below:
These are all important shortcuts you’ll need once you start streaming. Remember, the T Key binding will help you emulate touching the Touchpad on a PS5 Controller. However, you’re not going to be able to find any key bindings for swiping the Touchpad. Due to this limitation, you can’t stream a game that requires swiping the Touchpad on your PS5.
5. Add Chiaki to ROG Armory Crate
With the shortcuts set up, you’re going to add Chiaki to the ROG Armory Crate for easy access.
When you select Add, it’ll appear on the list. If it doesn’t, just reset it, and it’ll show up.
After it shows up on the list, check the box and click Done.
Connect Your PS5 with Chiaki
Now that you’ve added Chiaki to the ROG Armory Crate, open the app on your ROG Ally so you can finish registering.
After enabling your PS5’s Remote Play, it’ll show up on Chiaki like in the image above. This is where you’ll be using the PSN Account ID you generated earlier.
Copy the Encoded ID (for Chiaki) enter it in Chiaki and then you’ll need the temporary PIN for your PS5 that’s necessary every time you connect a new device to it.
To get the pin, go to Settings, select System, go to Remote Play and then select Link Device.
This will give you a temporary PIN.
When you enter the PIN in Chiaki, Register will become available.
Now, your PS5 will be successfully registered on the ROG Ally for Remote Play.
Run your PS5 from Your Ally
When you run it, it will default you out of the full screen, but you can use your shortcut to enter full screen mode again.
Once you enter full screen mode, you’re going to be able to enjoy your game, worry-free.
Final Thoughts
Setting up your ROG Ally to stream your PS5 games is an amazing way to enjoy a truly handheld experience. One more important thing to remember is that you’ll need to be connected to the home network on both devices. This setup allows you to play PS5 titles on your Ally when you’re at home but don’t want to play on the TV screen.
While it has its limitations, this is an amazing way to experience your favorite games when a screen isn’t available. Happy gaming, guys!
