Starfield FSR 3 Steam Deck Performance Update & Comparison

Starfield implemented FSR 3 as well as XeSS 1.2 and it's actually made quite a difference.

While these updates may not result in a significant increase in frames per second, they noticeably enhance the Starfield's visual quality, looking 10 times better. I appreciate the fix to character eyes, as NPCs no longer have odd-looking eyes and they now move around rather than aimlessly staring.

In terms of performance, there are occasional dips, especially in cut scenes and locations like Akila City, where frame rates still lag below the 20 FPS mark. The recommended settings for optimal performance involve starting with the low graphics preset, dynamic resolution set at 80%, and FSR 3 upscaling mode, with other settings mostly left at default. I warn against enabling FSR frame generation, as it introduces stutter and frame time issues without providing any actual FPS improvement due to the absence of RD3 support.

Regarding XeSS 1.2 balance, it yields similar results to FSR 3 but with a slightly higher performance hit. However, if players prefer the clarity of XeSS 1.2, I recommend using it. Check the video above for preferred settings, including reducing film grain intensity to 50% on FSR 3 and turning off dynamic resolution.

A comparison with a previous modded version highlights that, despite achieving similar frames per second, the current version with FSR 3 offers superior quality and clarity. The pixellation and struggles with maintaining 30 FPS in battles with the old mod, contrasting it with the FSR 3 version, which, although not flawless, provides a clearer and smoother experience.

Performance improvements are still lacking in larger towns, such as Akila City, where frame rates dip into the 20s. Despite this, the clarity difference compensates for the performance issues.
